Donald Trump stated that many elements of a peace agreement on Ukraine have been agreed upon, but much remains unresolved. "I look forward to speaking with President Putin," the U.S. president wrote.

"I will be speaking with President Putin about the war in Ukraine. Many elements of the final agreement have been agreed upon, but much still needs to be done," U.S. President Donald Trump wrote on his Truth Social account on March 17. "I look forward to speaking with President Putin," he added.

Earlier that day, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed preparations for the conversation between Putin and Trump. "That is indeed the case. Such a conversation is being prepared for Tuesday," he said during a briefing, responding to a related question.

Trump himself had announced his intention to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the upcoming Tuesday during a conversation with journalists on March 16. The discussion took place aboard Air Force One as Trump was returning to Washington from his Florida residence at Mar-a-Lago. Trump noted that he hoped he and Putin would "be able to make some statements" regarding the U.S. proposal for a ceasefire in Ukraine.
