According to the Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia Shalva Papuashvili, the signals that have recently been coming from the Ukrainian authorities give hope that a reassessment of policy toward Georgia and the Georgian people is taking place.

He told journalists that the future will show how seriously the “mistaken policy” previously pursued by the Ukrainian leadership toward the Georgian people, Georgia, and its authorities will be reconsidered.

Papuashvili also commented on how the public expression of gratitude by Ukraine’s Foreign Minister toward his Georgian counterpart should be interpreted, and how he sees Georgia–Ukraine relations in this context.

“We do not do this for gratitude. We do it so that a rules-based international order can function. This is important for us as well, for our national interests. Just as in the past, when Georgia supported and initiated hundreds of resolutions and various international instruments regarding Ukraine, we continue this policy. We have always acted this way, regardless of the attitude of the Ukrainian leadership toward the Georgian people and the Georgian state. The signals we have recently seen from the Ukrainian authorities give us hope that there is a reassessment of their policy toward Georgia and the Georgian people. We will see; time will show how serious this reassessment of the mistaken policy will be,” said Shalva Papuashvili.

For context, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha wrote on social media yesterday that he appreciates the swift response of the Swiss OSCE Chairmanship and Georgia’s Chairmanship of the Forum for Security Co-operation to convene a special meeting in Vienna.

“I am grateful to my Swiss and Georgian colleagues Ignazio Cassis and Maka Botchorishvili for their leadership, as well as to all countries that today clearly upheld the UN Charter and the Helsinki principles,” wrote Andrii Sybiha.
